Fasting sets aside the smaller things in life that we have made big and makes room for is to make a big deal out of God, Our everything in life.
Say you haven’t made a big deal out of food. Try fasting for a day or two and then say we don’t make a big deal out of food.

God has come to us in Jesus to pursue a relationship, but that doesn’t mean the relationship is easy. We are trying to communicate and follow a God we can’t physically see or hear. It becomes easy to follow, relate, and interact with those things that we can see and hear. We need to set those things aside in order to do the hard work of pursuing God in his Word and leave room in the quiet for his Spirit to speak.
Jesus asked the rich young ruler to give away all that he had to follow him. This isn’t commanded in order to follow Jesus, but occasionally it is good to give up those things that we can easily set our hearts on. It checks what or who we love more.
Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.
